Wolves to Face Undefeated Ponchatoula Green Wave on Friday Night

untitled-1

(COVINGTON, La.) —  The St. Paul’s Wolves are set to play the Ponchatoula Green Wave in a crucial district matchup in Hunter Stadium this Friday, Oct. 14, at 7 p.m.

The Wolves will be entering Friday night’s game with a 5-1 overall record, and a 3-0 district record. Last Friday, the Wolves defeated the Covington Lions 31-14 on the road to take home “the brown jug” for the third consecutive year.

In that game against the Lions, St. Paul’s was able to fight back after trailing 14-7 at halftime. Sophomore quarterback Johntae McDowell impressively completed 20 of 31 attempts with 262 pass yards, 36 rush yards, and three touchdowns through the air. Two of McDowell’s touchdown passes were to senior receiver Thomas Celestine. Junior running back Corey Williamson rushed for 47 yards against the Lion defense and came away with one touchdown run.

The Wolves’ defense struggled in covering Lion receivers Mason Cialona and Milton Clark in the first half, but the Lions were not able to revisit the end zone after the first half. Moreover, the Wolves held Covington to only 254 total yards on offense. Senior defensive end Bradley Mashburn had an incredible 12 tackles and 4 sacks against the Lions. Senior linebacker Josh Tourelle also had an outstanding night with 13 tackles against the Lions.

The Ponchatoula Green Wave will be entering tonight’s game with a 6-0 overall record and a 3-0 district record. Last Friday, the Green Wave barely pulled out a 23-20 victory over the Slidell Tigers after a blocked field goal prevented the game from heading into overtime.

Ponchatoula’s threatening offense is led by Senior quarterback JaKyle Holmes, whose outstanding rushing ability is just as impressive as his passing ability. Holmes threw for only 45 yards and one touchdown against the Green Wave’s victory over Slidell, but he rushed for a whopping 135 yards. Ponchatoula’s running game also consists of the speedy running back Joquan Johnson, who struggled against the Slidell defense last Friday.

The matchup this Friday between the Wolves and the Green Wave most likely will determine the 2016 District 6-5A champion, considering that both of these teams have dominated their district opponents. It is not very often that two undefeated District 6-5A foes go head to head in Hunter Stadium.
