The ninth grade St. Paul’s Wolves football team dominated both sides of the ball in their season opener against Lakeshore on Wednesday, Aug. 22. The Wolves were ahead 24-0 when the game was called due to an injury to a Lakeshore player with 1:33 left in the game. The player laid on the turf for some time before being taken off in an ambulance. SPS Dean of Students Ken Sears reported on the following morning’s announcements that the Lakeshore player was recovering well.
The St. Paul’s offense moved the ball very well behind the efficient passing of Kenny Sears– who was 6/8 with two touchdowns–and a balanced rushing attack consisting of Domnic Davenport, Mason Hebert, Brandon Eberts, and Francois Elzy. The Wolves’ offensive line did an excellent job of protecting Sears and opening holes for the backs. Hebert scored on a two-yard run; Davenport and wide receiver Grant Gallaspy each caught a touchdown.
The Wolves defense did not allow a first down until the third quarter. When the Titans finally threatened to score in the fourth quarter, St. Paul’s safety Gino Guarino intercepted an overthrown pass in the St. Paul’s end zone and returned it 35 yards.
St. Paul’s front seven seemed to live in the Lakeshore backfield, starting the game with a Dante Payne sack and ending it with more than ten tackles for loss.
