John Larson, a junior at the St. Paul’s School, became the new band announcer for the school’s Marching Wolves. Interviews were held on Sept. 3, and it soon after became apparent John had booked the job.
“I’m humbled to be able to do it. It’s cool to be in the press box and see how everything works,” said Larson about his new role.
The role of the band announcer is to announce the upcoming songs that will be performed by the Marching Wolves as they take the field at halftime. He also introduces the song artist, a brief summary about the song, the band’s director and assistant director, and the dance team and their director.
Apart from this new-found job, Larson is also a member of the football team. So, the transition from field to booth is a fast-paced move for him.
“If you see a guy in a football uniform running up and down the stands during the game, don’t be alarmed. He’s just doing his job,” explained junior Kenny Ross, Marching Wolves member.
Larson’s history with the Marching Wolves goes back to his eighth grade year, when he joined the band as a musician. He has been in the drum line for three years, but sat out this year to join the football team for it’s 2012 season. Larson plans to return to the band this upcoming winter for the Marching Wolves’ concert and marching seasons.
Larson’s first official turn announcing the halftime show was Friday, Sept. 7, at the St. Paul’s football game against Lincoln High School, a Florida based team. The wolves lost by a score of 14-13 in a close game at the Mercedes-Benz Superdome in New Orleans.
