Sweeping Winds Shift Campus Events

Hurricane Isaac devastated the Gulf coast late during the month of August. With winds up to 80 miles-per-hour and with a storm surge up to 11 feet of water, Hurricane Isaac suspended multiple planned events for St. Paul’s School, including the first home football game of the season against Edna Karr, originally scheduled for Aug. 31.

“Karr called on Friday and said they had to cancel,” said Head Football Coach Ken Sears about the rescheduling of the game. “Franklinton also canceled on John Curtis, so I got a call from Coach [J.T.] Curtis about having a game. Coach Ketelsen did a fantastic job getting the game approved. We had to sign a contract in order to get the game official. We also had to hire officials and policemen and we had to find people who could run the concessions and the gates.” Sears added, “This was all done in a matter of a couple of hours.”

Fans cheered on the St. Paul’s Wolves despite the heat.

There were other issues revolved around the rescheduling. “Due to the power outages, we realized that some people would have a curfew, so that is why we moved the game to 3 o’clock,” Sears said.

Sears added, “I would like to thank the fans that could make it to the game. Also, I would like to thank our supporters, the officials, policemen, and volunteers who made the game possible.”

The St. Paul’s/John Curtis game took place on Saturday, Sept. 1, at 3:00 p.m. with the 2011 AA state champions achieving a 26-7 win against St. Paul’s.

Another event postponed by Hurricane Isaac was the City of Covington’s Bicentennial Celebration. The city originally planned the event to take place on Thursday, Aug.28, at the Covington Trailhead. The event has been rescheduled for Sept. 25 at 5:30 p.m., and the St. Paul’s Marching Wolves have been invited to the celebration with plans to march around the city and face Covington High School in a battle of the bands.
