Famous “Top Gun” director Tony Scott jumped to his death on Monday, Aug. 20, as reported by the L.A. County Coroner. According to the local L.A. County Authorities, Scott jumped from the Vincent Thomas Bridge around 12:30 p.m.

Four hours after the incident, Scott’s body was found in the water using specialized sonar equipment. The local authorities reported that a suicide letter was found inside of Scott’s parked car on the eastbound lane of the bridge.

Tony Scott directed many notable films such as “Top Gun,” “The Hunger,” “Enemy of the State,” “Déjà Vu,” and “Man On Fire.”

Eyewitness David Silva told The Los Angeles Times, “He was on the roadway close to the fence looking around… He looked nervous, I thought it was some extreme sports guy.” Silva continued, “(Scott) paused a couple of seconds and then began to climb the fence. He put his foot on the top of the fence and paused again — and then he threw himself off.”

Tony Scott’s most notable hit, “Top Gun,” included actors such as Tom Cruise and Kelly McGillis. Actor Tom Cruise released the following statement about Scott’s death:

“Tony was my dear friend and I will really miss him. He was a creative visionary whose mark on film is immeasurable. My deepest sorrow and thoughts are with his family at this time.”

St. Paul’s School Film Class teacher, Denny Charbonnet, reacted to Scott’s death after hearing the news.

“Tony Scott was an incredible person. He loved directing movies that were on the edge and that were exciting. My favorite movies directed by him are ‘Top Gun,’ ‘Deja Vu,’ and ‘Days of Thunder.’ It was a tragedy that he took his own life,” said Charbonnet. “He was a fabulous director.”
