The Wrestling Wolves Ready to Take Down the Season

Senior Connor Campo gets ready to take on his opponent.

The Wrestling Wolves kicked off the 2012 season in early November and look strong for the future under direction of Head Coach and Athletic Director Craig Ketelsen.

Last year, the Wolves finished 5th in the state and had three state champions: current senior Connor Campo, current senior David Englehardt, and 2012 alumnus Chris Arms.

The Wolves began the new season by traveling to Mandeville High on Nov. 10 to take part in the annual Mandeville Open. The Wolves had a strong showing with five seniors placing in the top four: Connor Campo in first, Dominic Loventi in second, and Jordan Peterson, John Brands, and Quinn Perret in fourth. Campo was also named the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler.

Senior David Englehardt takes down his opponent from Rummel.

The Wolves than traveled to Fontainebleau High on Nov. 17 to take part in the Bulldog Duals. This tournament would test the Wolves on how they wrestle as a team. The Wolves were placed in a pool with Pearl River High and Archbishop Rummel. The Wolves started the tournament strong, beating both Rummel and Pearl River, giving them an automatic bid into the championship pool.

In the championship pool, the Wolves would have to face the Jesuit Blue Jays and the Holy Cross Tigers. Against Jesuit, the Wolves put up a fight but fell short, losing to Jesuit 36-33. The wolves would then have to defeat Holy Cross to keep their championship hopes alive. The Wolves took an early 12-9 lead over the Tigers, but after a series of pins, Holy Cross came out on top winning 45-21. The Wolves finished in third behind the Jays in second place and the Tigers, who captured first.

The Wolves will resume action when they face Archbishop Rummel in a dual meet at the Gene Bennett Sports Complex on Wednesday, Nov. 28 at 7pm.
