Saints wide receiver Chris Olave was arrested for reckless operation of a motor vehicle in Kenner, Louisiana, around 9 p.m. on October 23, 2023.
According to a press release, “Officers clocked a Dodge Charger traveling at 70 mph in a posted 35 mph zone. The distance from where the vehicle turned off from Williams Boulevard and where the vehicle was clocked at that speed was only a two-block distance. The vehicle was observed traveling in a reckless manner maneuvering between lanes and around other drivers.”

Olave seemed to show some remorse for what he did, saying “That’s on me. I was just trying to get home.”
However, the moment Olave was told he was under arrest, he attempted to use his position as an NFL player to get out of it. Specifically, Olave told the officer, “My bad, dawg. I play for the Saints, man.” The officer, unimpressed, replied “And?”
According to multiple media reports, Olave did not resist arrest and complied with the officers.
Surprisingly, Olave’s arrest likely will not affect his playing status, as the Saints organization seems to be moving on from his incident quickly. Head coach Dennis Allen says “The team is not going to make his arrest any more than what it is.’’
Allen later went on to say, “He was arrested for speeding and reckless driving. That’s something that we’ve had a chance to sit down and visit with him. He obviously understands that he made a mistake, and he just has got to slow down. That’s really what it was, so we’re not going to make any more of it than that.”
The NFL has not released a statement, and it is unclear whether Olave may face a suspension in the future.

This is the second time in a few months that Olave has been the recipient of a speeding ticket. He also received a ticket on August 21, 2023 for driving 54 mph in a 35 mph zone, according to the Kenner Police Department.
Olave is the Saints’ leading receiver this season with 39 catches for 471 yards and one touchdown. However, it may not be a coincidence that Olave struggled in the game following his arrest. In fact, Olave had a seemingly perfect pass bounce off his facemask on what could have been a touchdown.
Saint Paul’s senior Samuel Drez felt Olave seemed distracted with the off-field incidents. “Olave would be a better wide receiver on the football field if he stopped receiving speeding tickets off the field.”
Hopefully, the distractions will slow down for Olave during the second half of the season.
