“ARK: Survival Ascended” Review, What’s Different?

“ARK: Survival Ascended” was recently released as a revamp of the hit game “ARK: Survival Evolved.”

It has been eight years since Studio Wildcard, the game developers, released a new game, and 600,000 people have bought it so far, according to IGN.

Although it was released to console players on November 18, PC (Personal Computer) players have been playing it on Steam, a digital game distributor, since November 4. Many players are wondering what the improvements are going to be and if it is worth spending the $45.

The game overall has many improvements such as improved graphics, smoother gameplay, better building, cross-platform multiplayer, built-in mods, and new dinosaurs.

Wildcard has completely redone the graphics for the water textures and physics, making the graphics significantly better.

The character-building screen has also been completely changed compared to the old one. It allows for a more customizable and creative way to build a character.

Wildcard has improved the building into a more free placement compared to the snap placing in the previous game “ARK: Survival Evolved.” The building also has a scroll for quicker building without needing to go into the player’s inventory to change builds.

It is now possible to snap-place (pre-set places objects connect to) chests and other crafting objects for a cleaner look. It also makes it impossible for builds to stick through walls. There is also no longer a timer on the pickup time of builds.

The cross-platform between Windows and Xbox is currently available; however, it is not possible to cross-platform between Steam and Xbox as of now. Although, it has been announced that sometime during December this will become possible.

The number of cross-platform mods is already at crazy numbers. As of now, there are 550 mods on Steam. Xbox is slowly adding mods and currently has around 350 available, according to PCGamesN. Mods are downloads to improve a game or add features that are not originally in the game. The mods can improve game experience at the cost of a potentially lower frame rate.

The current maps that are available are The Island, Scorched Earth, Aberration, Extinction, Ragnorak, Valguero, Crystal Isles, Lost Island, The Center, and Fjordur.

Wildcard has also added five new dinosaurs to “ARK: Survival Ascended”: Dreadnoughtus, Fasolasuchus, Gigantoraptor, Shastasaurus, Yi Ling, and Rhyniognatha.

The Dreadnoughtus lives on the Extinction map. It is a sauropod, a rideable and tameable herbivore that can’t be bred. A sauropod is a dinosaur with a long neck and tail. It is currently not in the game without using mods.

The Fasolasuchus is a tameable and rideable carnivorous reptile that is found on the Scorched Earth map. It is unknown whether or not it is breedable at the moment because of how recently the dino has been added to the game.

The Gigantoraptor is an omnivore found on Ragnarok. An omnivore is a dinosaur that eats both meat and plants. It is not tameable, rideable, or breedable.

The Shastasaurus is a carnivorous reptile that lives in the waters of The Center. It is tameable, but it is unknown if it is rideable or breedable because of it recently being added to the game. It is a distant relative of the Ichthyosaur, a dolphin-like dinosaur.

The Yi Ling is an omnivore classified under the fantasy creature category. As of now, it is tameable but not rideable or breedable. It is found in Abberation.

The Rhyniognatha is an omnivore found on The Island and Lost Island. It is currently ridable but not tamable or breedable. Although, it is technically not a new dinosaur because it was previously added to “ARK: Survival Evolved” right before the release of “ARK: Survival Ascended” it was intended to be one of the new dinosaurs for Ascended.

Overall, Studio Wildcard made many improvements compared to their previous game, especially considering the five new dinosaurs that were added.
