Dc The Don released the deluxe to his album “Funeral,” showing a completely different style of music than he had ever experimented with before. This album released on May 5, 2023, with the deluxe being released on September 22, 2023.
Dc The Don is a rapper/singer/songwriter who has gained a large following over the past five years. Dc’s career was kick started when his first song “Everything 1K” was used in an advertisement for Lonzo Ball’s Big Baller Brand shoe brand.
Dc’s prior albums, such as “Dc Dahmer,” “Come As You Are,” and “My Own Worst Enemy” are all easily separable from each other, and all provide their own distinctive sound. Dc showed no signs of slowing down, with “Funeral” being his most significant change in style yet.
Dc spoke on these constant changes in style on X in regards to his upcoming music. “If you wanna listen to the same album over and over again, pick another artist cuz ima disapoint you. Grow with me or don’t but I gotta keep elevating.”
This year has been huge for Dc’s career, as Dc has been featured as the fan voted pick for the XXL freshman list. Dc has also gone on to perform at his first two festivals ever: Lyrical Lemonade’s Summer Smash event, and Rolling Loud Miami.
On top of all of these events, Dc’s album has seen massive success. This success is deserved, as “Funeral” is one of the most dynamic albums of the year.
The album opens with the title track “Funeral,” which serves as a cinematic introduction to the album. The song starts with Dc’s vocals fading in on top of a soft sounding bass drum, then transitions into him rapping over a mix of 808’s, snare drums, and bells.
A prominent style in this album is synth pop, where the artist sings over robotic synth notes, giving off a futuristic vibe. Songs like “Urgent,” “Bankrupt :/,” and “Used 2 Be/Me,” showcase this style. As for Dc’s performance on these songs, he does not disappoint. He adapts to these beats perfectly, making listeners want more of this style.
Dc also made sure not to stray away from his roots in music, with songs such as “12AM” and “Working On Dying.” These tracks took his hardcore style off of “My Own Worst Enemy” but with enough new elements to not feel completely re-used.
The last prominent genre on the album is Indie rock. This genre makes up most of the album with songs like “Going Stuck,” “My Jacket Don’t Fit You,” and “WAY TOO MUCH.” These songs feature more simple instrumentals with softer, more natural sounding beats.
The cause of this more natural sound is the use of actual drums, which offers a completely different sound and feel to 808’s.
Overall, I would rate this album 9.5/10. The combination of so many different sounds put together into one album create a product that almost anyone could listen to and find a song that they enjoy.
This album sets the stage for his next album “REBIRTH” to be his greatest album yet. Dc has said himself that “REBIRTH” will be his best work yet via a post on X. “REBIRTH > FUNERAL MOW3 CAYA SH.”
