The Wrestling Wolves Tame The Bulldogs at The Fontainebleau Dual Meet

The Wrestling Wolves dominated the Fontainebleau Bulldogs 54-21 on the wrestling mat at the Fontainebleau Dual Meet on November 15.

The Wolves punctuated the victory with seven wins and four losses.

The most dominating performance was from Conlan Enk; he earned a tech fall, winning 17-2, setting the tone for the Wolves.

Next up was Rhett Nastasi at 113 pounds. The match started and they were hand-fighting in neutral for about a minute, trying to gain good position. With 45 seconds left in the round, Nastasi got a takedown worth two points. When the round ended, Nastasi was close to a pin, gaining three points for near-fall. Nastasi was up five to zero at the end of the first round. Nastasi got a takedown worth another two points 16 seconds into the second round. With only 43 seconds left Nastasi pinned his opponent for a seven to zero win.

After him was Luke Jones at 120 pounds. The match started and within the first fifteen seconds Jones was taken down for two points for Fontainebleau. Right after that, Jones was nearly pinned, but escaped giving Fontainebleau two more points for near-fall. Jones got a reversal 22 seconds later, giving him two points. Jones stayed on top of his opponent until the first round ended.

The second round started, and Jones was turned into pinning position, but escaped twice to give Fontainebleau four points for near-fall. After that, Jones held on to bottom until the round ended. Round three began and neutral was chosen. 56 seconds into the round Jones got a takedown for two points. With only 12 seconds left in the round, Fontainebleau got a reversal worth two points. With eight seconds left Jones got a point because Fontainebleau was stalling.

The match ended, and Fontainebleau won, giving the Wolves their first loss of the night.

Third was Avis Bourg in the 126-pound weight class. 52 seconds into the match Bourg got a takedown for two points. However, 15 seconds later Fontainebleau escaped and got a point. 19 seconds after that Bourg was taken down by Fontainebleau for two points. The round ended with Bourg nearly being pinned with a two-point near-fall for Fontainebleau.

In the second round, they were in neutral, and 29 seconds in, Fontainebleau took down Bourg for another two points. 27 seconds later Bourg was pinned giving Fontainebleau their second win.

The team score at this point was 17-14, with Fontainebleau leading.

Fourth was Cole Mire in the 132-pound weight class. For the entirety of the first round, Mire and Fontainebleau battled in neutral. Neither one was getting the position that he needed.

In round two, Mire was on top and battled for 90 seconds to no avail. Fontainebleau escaped for one point. After that, they were in neutral for the rest of the round. In round 3, Mire was on the bottom and battled, trying to escape. With 23 seconds left in the round Fontainebleau made a crucial mistake; Fontainebleau was called for stalling and Mire gained two points.

For the rest of the round Mire rode it out on the bottom for the win 2-1.

Fifth was Baylor Delaune in the 138 pounds. weight class. 45 seconds into the round Fontainebleau got a take-down worth two points. 51 seconds later Fontainebleau got a pin.

Sixth was Landon Noblet in the 144-pound weight class. 21 seconds into the match Noblet took down his opponent for two points. After a long struggle on top, Noblet nearly pinned his opponent, so he earned three points for near-fall. 20 seconds later, the first round ended.

In the second round, they started again in neutral, and Noblet, yet again, took down his opponent for two more points. After that, there was a long fight on top before the second round ended.

In the third round, after 28 seconds on the bottom, Noblet escaped and scored a point. A few seconds later Noblet got another takedown for two points. 38 seconds later, Noblet nearly got another pin, but his opponent stopped it. With seven seconds left Noblet locked his hands on top and gave his opponent a point. The match ended, Noblet securing another win for the Wolves.

Now, the team scores were 28-21 Wolves.

Seventh was Conlan Enk at 157 pounds. Only 24 seconds in Enk earned two points for a takedown, and fourteen seconds later Enk claimed some back-points by nearly pinning his opponent. But 35 seconds later his opponent escaped for one point, but 12 seconds later he was returned to the mat by takedown from Enk. He let his opponent back up to give him a point, but only so he could set up another shot and takedown for two more points. The round ended shortly after that with nothing as prominent happening.

Eight seconds into the second round, Enk was ready to finish off his opponent. He took him down for two more points and nearly pinned him for two more points. He worked the move again and this time pinned and teched his opponent.

Eighth was Caleb Shartle in the 165-pound weight class. Only 10 seconds into the round Shartle took his opponent down and earned two points. He nearly pinned his opponent and got three points, but his opponent got a reversal and pinned Shartle.

Ninth was Jared Paulino in the 175-pound weight class. For an entire minute and 46 seconds, Paulino fought his opponent in neutral. Right then, he got a takedown worth two points. After that, the round ended.

In the second round, only six seconds in, Paulino escaped for one point. 18 seconds later, he took his opponent down again for two more points. However, 16 seconds later Paulino’s opponent escaped for one point. Then only two seconds later Jared got another takedown. The round ended after that.

After 43 seconds in the third round, Paulino again got a takedown for two points. Then, with 30 seconds left, he nearly pinned his opponent for three points. With only eight seconds remaining, Paulino pinned his opponent and won.

Tenth was John Martinez at the 215 pound weight class. 18 seconds in, Martinez got a takedown for two points. 36 seconds later Martinez earned two points for near-fall. One second later his opponent escapes gaining his only point of the match. 10 seconds later, Martinez got another takedown for two points. 10 seconds after that, Martinez pinned his opponent for the win.

Last was Matthew Burmaster at the 285 pound heavyweight class. After 30 seconds of neutral, Burmaster was taken down by his opponent for two points. 11 seconds later, Burmaster escaped for one point. 46 seconds later, while in neutral, Burmaster got taken down again for two points to Fontainebleau. 20 seconds later Burmaster got a reversal for two points. After that, the round ended.

In the second round, 26 seconds in, Burmaster got another reversal for two points; however, 18 seconds later, Fontainebleau got a reversal for two points. 23 seconds later, Burmaster got one last reversal for two points. Only a few points later, Burmaster got a pin.

After the match, a Saint Paul’s student who attended the meet expressed how nerve-racking the match was. “That match was a roller coaster; it made me bite my nails every time they switched.”

There were three forfeits, all against Fontainebleau. These forfeits subtracted from the team scores, and so did pins. The forfeits were in favor of Jackson Peak, Scott Cascio, and Bray Bertucci.

After the match, Head Coach Matt Pinero was proud of the team and praised their performance but not forgetting the need to always improve. “The team performed really well. We did a good job in certain areas. Overall, we did well but there are a few spots to improve.”

The final score was 54-21.
