Long-time drummer and New Orleans native Herlin Riley’s fame continued its late rise after showing off “tricks with his sticks” in the Bayou Bar of the Pontchartrain Hotel in New Orleans on what seemed like a typical Wednesday night.
Riley attracted news networks after the audience, amazed by his skills with drum sticks, grew large. Oddly enough, the local bar normally Riley plays at is one of the least publicized jazz spots in the city, so despite his obvious talent, Riley had never garnered too much fame.
Riley, coming from a very musically inclined family, had been around music at a very young age and started playing the drums at age three. Living in New Orleans while it was the jazz capital of the world at the time also helped turn Riley (66) toward his music career.
With Riley being a part of the Lastie musical dynasty in New Orleans, his performances show great knowledge, not only because he represents the quintessence of jazz, but also because he has the bloodline.
Riley’s grandfather, Frank Lastie, was a drummer alongside Louis Armstrong, another New Orleans musical legend. Lastie, after spending time in jail, then became a deacon who is known for “bringing the drums in Church.” His drum influence is still used today is some religions such as Buddhism.
Riley picked up on music and certain beats as a child because of his grandfather, who would use almost anything to make a beat while at the dinner table.
“I heard my grandfather playing these New Orleans street beat rhythms on the kitchen table using butter knives, and he would challenge me to do them.” Riley’s grandfather impacted his life significantly and was the one who inspired him to be who he is today.
Riley felt a strong connection with music throughout high school. He briefly quit playing the drums during high school and started playing the trumpet, though Riley returned back to the drums after graduating high school and played throughout college.
After college, Riley spent three years as a member of a band led by Ahmad Jamal, which then led to Riley becoming a drum teacher at four different schools.
Riley realized at a young age that music was his passion and that he wanted to pursue his musical dream. Riley shared that he has a sensational feeling when he’s behind the drums holding his sticks. He always feels a strong connection while playing music.
Riley received much hate coming out of high school and starting his music career. “To have that confidence and belief in yourself also extends to life generally,” said Riley.

“Perpetual Optimism” Riley’s album, released on April 12, 2019, was a relatively popular hit. Riley being 62 years old when releasing his second album isn’t common.
Riley’s message behind this album and what he wants people to comprehend from his music is very powerful. “I always look forward, no matter what happens in life. If you’re grieving or faced with an emotional challenge, keep in mind: If you’re still breathing, there’s a chance that you can overcome and thrive.”
Riley is a prime example of how hard work pays off. Starting music at such a young age and then joining a band right out of high school isn’t easy. He dropped everything to focus on his music career. Riley then went to Southern University, stopped his focus on the trumpet and continued playing the drums in college.
Riley continues to amaze people and strive at what he does best, playing the drums. His fans certainly look forward to hearing more about Riley’s career and any new music he creates.
