A closer look at Lil Tecca’s ‘Plan A’

Lil Tecca’s Plan A, released on Sept. 20, 2024, has the idea of combining the different genres of rap into one big project.

This album has 18 tracks, and it was produced by Taz Taylor and the Internet Money Crew. We’ve seen these producers on Tecca’s previous albums and know what these two can do. “I didn’t produce a lot of it, but definitely my beat selection is what drives a lot of the production,” said Tecca.

In Plan A, the 22-year-old assembles his usual fast-paced beats and adds some diversity with the addition of “Don Toliver,” which is unusual considering that Tecca doesn’t include many features on his albums. This album adds to the rap chaos going on this year.

Plan A dives into different sounds to attract more and different audiences. It incorporates chill pieces and some that will pump listeners up.

We find Tecca stepping into a more mature and personal version of himself. “I wanted to bring people one step closer into my personal life,” stated Tecca. He went on: “I wanted to incorporate both sides of the spectrum: really ‘Hypebeast’ music but also really mellow, soft sounds.”

The two lead singles Tecca released were Number 2 and Never Last, which were released this year in early May. Tecca also dropped a music video on the same day.

The third single, Taste, was released around 4 months later, on August 9, and charted at 31 on the “Hot Singles Chart” in New Zealand.

Saint Paul’s sophomore Owen Dannels-Smith claimed Taste was initially his favorite song on the album. “Taste was a great way to start the album. After Taste, I knew there would be more great songs,” Dannels-Smith said.

The last single, Bad Time, was released two weeks after Taste and charted at number 17 on the New Zealand Hot Singles Chart. This is my favorite song on this album, and it has accumulated 11 million views very quickly. In this song, Tecca expresses his dissatisfaction with how women treat him, accepting the never-ending cycle of his bad relationships.

Plan A provides a sense of fluidity and excitement throughout this project. Tecca never fails to dominate the underground game while also producing extraordinary amounts of it.

We also see Tecca trying out new flows with the song SELF2SELF, which he showed out with. Tecca also does a great job transitioning songs together throughout the album. For example, the transition between Taste Bad Time did an amazing job of seamlessly bonding these two great songs together.

Saint Paul’s sophomore Roman Brasuell admired the diversity of the album. “I am impressed with the diversity Tecca brings to this album, and I enjoy seeing a different side of his rap game,” said Brasuell.

Another great song on the album is D1. It has smooth and heavy beats, which make it upbeat but also soothing. The chorus is really catchy.

D1 tells us how Tecca can upgrade a girl’s life and make her happy. He also states that he has no enemies or threats. Tecca raps with a dismissive tone, which is comforting.

The name Plan A comes from kids at Tecca’s high school asking if he has a “Plan B” if his dream of rapping would not work out. “Honestly, I don’t have a backup plan at the moment, and I don’t know if I’ll ever have one,” Tecca remarked.

Plan A is the follow-up album to his previous album, TEC, which was a hit before it came out. TEC came out in the summer of 2023 and exceeded everyone’s expectations. It featured Ken Carson and Kodak Black as well.

Tecca rose to fame in 2019 with his single Ransom, which peaked at number four on the Billboard Hot 100 and is currently an 8x-platinum.

After listening to Plan A several times, I would rate it a 6/10. This album could have been a little bit stronger. As stated, there are some great songs, but there are also some mediocre songs. Overall, however, Plan A shows his growth as an artist with more personal themes, proving his versatility and solidifying his place in the new wave.
