Discovering the North Shore’s coffee scene: a focus on four unique cafés

Louisiana has a strong, thriving coffee culture, with cafés offering everything from artisanal brews to community vibes and values. Here’s a closer look at four standout coffee shops across the North Shore.

Abita Coffee Works

Located in Covington off Highway 1085, Abita Coffee Works is a charming local coffee shop under the Abita Roasting Company. The company’s beans are roasted right on the North Shore. Another similar and popular spot is Abita Roasting Co. along the Madisonville riverfront, offering coffee, breakfast, brunch, lunch, dinner, and a selection of artisan pastries. While both locations share a similar menu, Coffee Works has its unique charm.

The café features a crisp, pet-friendly atmosphere filled with the many scents of freshly baked pastries and, in the afternoons, the savory smell of bacon. Committed to being eco-friendly, Abita sources from local farms such as Sam Sprouts. Abita showcases cozy seating adorned with local art. With free Wi-Fi and ample space, it caters perfectly to people who need to work, students seeking a comfortable place to study or unwind, and even small meetings. Whether you’re looking to relax or focus, Abita Coffee Works is one of the ideal spots here in Covington to sip and relax.

Tandem Coffee and Cocktails

Tandem Coffee and Cocktails in Mandeville, off the Lake Pontchartrain lakefront, has quickly become a local favorite, known for its precision in brewing and a diverse selection of expertly crafted single-origin coffees. Committed to sustainability, they source high-quality beans ethically from around the world. The shop boasts an exquisite menu with delicious options, including freshly baked goods and popular health-conscious offerings like acai bowls, making it a great spot for breakfast or a refreshing snack.

In addition to its coffee offerings, Tandem features a selection of cocktails and alcoholic beverages. With a minimalist aesthetic, the shop creates a cozy atmosphere for relaxation or work, often showcasing local artwork. The inviting outdoor seating lets customers enjoy drinks in the pleasant Louisiana weather.

With their dedication to community engagement, Tandem often hosts events ranging from drag brunches to local artist showcases. Many consider it a must-visit for coffee or cocktail enthusiasts and anyone looking to unwind.

Cured on Columbia

Located in the heart of downtown Covington, Cured on Columbia offers a unique blend of exquisite coffee, a delicious selection of cured meats, fresh, mouth-watering artisanal pastries, and a wide variety of flavors, including sugar-free options. Saint Paul’s teacher, Nick Guarisco, considers himself a Cured regular.

“Cured is a staple of our family’s Saturday plans, largely due to my 3-year-old daughter Reese’s obsession with both the food and atmosphere. She has the time of her life dancing to the music and admiring the plant-based aesthetics outside and festive decorations inside, all while unapologetically gouging herself with homemade donuts and hummus from Cured’s famous hummus board. My wife and I each get an almond milk latte, and we are hard-pressed to find one as tasty and potent without being loaded with added sugar and sweeteners. That’s one thing we respect about Cured: they are delicious options that are genuinely healthy, which is sadly a rare combination nowadays. Cured is a criminally underrated spot on the Northshore.”

Using locally sourced ingredients, this café creates an experience that extends to its exceptional coffee offerings. The warm and inviting atmosphere makes it the perfect spot for anybody to savor their drinks and food, making it a popular gathering place. Cured on Columbia takes pride in building an authentic coffeehouse experience, with all food made in-house and a diverse menu that includes many gluten-free options. In addition, the baristas know how to accommodate any allergies to fit needs.
