Saint Paul’s alumni further their relationships and connections with one another and the school by giving back to the school community and interacting with their past brothers.
The brotherhood at Saint Paul’s school continues behind time spent physically at the school. Saint Paul’s alumni program not only keeps former students connected but also strengthens their connection to the school.
Brother Raymond Bulliard F.S.C. always taught and corrected people that alumni are plural for a group of alumni, and an alumnus is a male individual who graduated. Every alumnus should be proud he attended Saint Paul’s and got that opportunity, but it takes alumni to make a difference and keep the brotherhood strong.
Unlike other schools, Saint Paul’s website has an entire section dedicated to alumni and all of the events for the preceding school year, so alumni are aware and can attend. Saint Paul’s Alumni director, Al Nastasi (‘91), has done and continues to do an outstanding job keeping alumni connected by notifying them about various events for them to attend.
In many President’s assemblies, which are held for the entire student body every other week, Saint Paul’s has alumni guest speakers. There, alumni have all talked about their time at Saint Paul’s, how it helped shape their lives and careers after graduating, and what it has meant to be part of a brotherhood.
The Alumni Department organizes and hosts many events for alumni to reunite and return to their old school to see the student body as it is today and all that has vastly improved since their time there. The annual events for alumni include the Homecoming celebration, the Joseph A. Champagne/ Gene Bennett Memorial Golf Tournament, Christmas on Columbia, the Crawfish Cook-off and Reunion Weekend, the Alumni Trivia Night, and several alumni recognitions and sporting events, meetings, and tours throughout the year.
On Oct. 25, 2024, Saint Paul’s hosted its Sixth Annual Legacy Lunch for students and alumni fathers and grandfathers all to enjoy a meal together with different generations. This indeed shows how long the brotherhood lasts after time at Saint Paul’s.
Alumni Director Al Nastasi has organized the alumni calendar, which helps alumni correspond their own calendars with the school events for alumni dedicated to them.
One major reason Saint Paul’s can build new buildings and renovate older ones, such as the band hall and new dining hall, is because of the alumni who give back to the place they called home for five years (and many still call it home years later).
Every year, the school receives anonymous donations from alumni and their families who enjoy giving back to their old school. One of the reasons could be that Saint Paul’s is what led them on their successful path to be able to give back one day.
For every graduating class’s 50-year high school reunion, Saint Paul’s does something different than the other local schools. The alumni get inducted into the “Golden Jubilee,” which is the celebration of 50 years of a certain service. The entire faculty and student body attend the ceremony.
Saint Paul organizes their reunions very well and makes sure that even the previous alumni who have passed away are mentioned at the assembly, and a moment of silence is given to them to honor and recognize them.
Saint Paul’s Director of Communications, Andrew Dart (‘03), who also teaches AP Art History and US History, is a proud alumnus and says there is no better place to teach than Saint Paul’s School. “I came back here because I believe firmly in the mission and values that Saint Paul’s instills in its young men. I did my student teaching at other schools in Louisiana but found myself home at Saint Paul’s,” said Director Dart.
Dart is among many fellow Saint Paul’s alumni who decided to return to teach at Saint Paul’s. In fact, 23 of about 75 faculty members attended Saint Paul’s as students, which speaks to how special this place is and how strong the pull is to return.
