The state of Louisiana filed a lawsuit against the popular online game platform Roblox for the game’s poor moderation of children’s safety on Thursday, August 14.

The lawsuit was filed in state court by Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill. In a news release by Murrill, she stated, “Due to Roblox’s lack of safety protocols, it endangers the safety of the children of Louisiana. Roblox is overrun with harmful content and child predators because it prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety.”
Roblox states that they have “a zero-tolerance policy for the exploitation of minors,” not allowing players under the age of 13 to chat with other players outside of games without explicit parental permission. The company can look over and moderate the chat logs because the platform does not encrypt private chat conversations.
Murill believes that the game should be shut down. She said that there is no meaningful age verification process during the user sign-up process. Because of this, young kids, teenagers, and adults pretending to be children can sign up, according to her.
Roblox launched a feature recently that makes it a requirement for teenagers aged 13 to 17 to send video selfie evidence to verify their age if they want to use the chat feature freely.

Livingston Parish Sheriff Jason Ard has said his office has had several cases involving Roblox. An example he gave was when the police alleged a man of using voice-alternating technology to pose as a girl in the game. Ard had stated that the department has yet to make any arrest relating to the game platform.
The platform has had a problem with child predators running rampant in the game, preying upon impressionable children and talking to them in highly inappropriate ways. These predators are also able to create games on the platform where inappropriate actions are encouraged. Just last year, Roblox reported over 24,000 cases of supposed child sexual exploitation (CSE) to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC).

Roblox tries to block any personal information from being shared in their game’s chat system, like phone numbers, addresses, and Discord tags. However, much like other game platforms with similar chat policies, people manage to find loopholes to pass safeguards.
The company has already faced multiple lawsuits relating to its inability to protect children from predators on the platform. For example, a lawsuit was filed last month in Iowa against Roblox after a 13-year-old girl was allegedly talking to an adult predator before being kidnapped and trafficked.
Roblox has been in hot water with other controversies this year. The company banned the user Schlep and sent him a cease and desist for violating Roblox’s policies, specifically their new “vigilante groups.”

Schlep is a YouTuber who is actively working to get Roblox predators arrested and banned off the platform, not only with other predator-hunting YouTubers like JiDion but also with law enforcement. He has made six confirmed arrests of accused Roblox predators.
This Schlep ban has led to massive backlash against the company, leading to it losing $12 billion. “#freeschlep” has been spreading like wildfire all over the Internet, with people demanding that Schlep’s ban be lifted by Roblox.

People have been calling for the removal of current Roblox CEO David Baszucki from his position at the company. Baszucki released a response video with Chief Security Officer of Roblox Matt Kaufman and Senior Director of Product Policy Eliza Jacobs on Twitter on August 16th.
Part of the video went over their new vigilante policies and how the company wants to keep Roblox safe and predator-free. “We all want to keep Roblox safe,” claimed Kaufman.
The video would end up being community-noted (fact-checked) twice. The first one stated, “Roblox has a history of ignoring child predator issues, silencing critics, and even suing those who expose them (Ruben Sim). Now they’re threatening legal action against Schlep for helping get predators arrested”. The second one stated, “Roblox has a known history of refusing to take action against sexual/child predators”.

Host of the NBC show “To Catch A Predator” and crime journalist Chris Hansen has recently announced that he will be making a documentary that will go into Roblox’s handling of child safety issues. Schlep will be making an appearance in said documentary. No release date has been confirmed.
Law YouTuber “Law by Mike” announced on Sept. 1, 2025, that he would be suing Roblox over alleged failure to protect children on the platform. He will be part of Schlep’s legal team on this case. Schlep hasn’t officially filed a lawsuit yet.

Saint Paul’s senior and avid Roblox player Alexander Schneller believes that it’s not entirely Roblox’s fault for their predator problem.
“It’s both the fault of Roblox and the parents. Roblox does need to crack down more on their predator problem by implementing some age verification systems. However, the parents also need to be more aware and protective of what their children see on the Internet,” said Schneller.
On the other hand, Saint Paul’s senior Rogan Martinez has a good idea for why Roblox is at the point that it’s at.
“The problem with Roblox is that everyone has access to it,” said Martinez. Rogan believes that the almost unlimited access to Roblox leads to children being taken advantage of on the game platform.
All this backlash has shed a dark cloud over Roblox’s image; unfortunately for big fans of the game, it doesn’t look like it’s getting any brighter from here.
