Spirit Week, which began on Oct. 8 at St. Paul’s School, is a great predecessor to the Homecoming dance and annual alumni gathering.
“It’s fun to dress out and see how creative everyone is,” stated junior Matthew Spedale about Spirit Week at SPS.
This week at St. Paul’s will be filled with many students dressed in costumes according to themes for each day set by Student Council President Connor Mahony.
Monday was Crazy Hat Day. On Twin Day, occurring on Tuesday, students were to find a “twin” and wear similar costumes. On Wednesday, students wore pink for breast cancer awareness. On College Day on Thursday, students donned paraphernalia from their favorite college or fraternity, and the school day ended in a pep rally. And, as always, Friday will be Blue and Gold Day when students are encouraged to “go all out” and wear as much blue and gold for SPS as physically possible.
In his weekly newsletter, President/Principal Brother Ray Bulliard, F.S.C., welcomed students to wear creative costumes, but stressed that appropriateness, as always, is a priority.
These Spirit Week events lead up to the Homecoming football game on Friday and the Homecoming dance on Saturday that will be held this year at Vintage Court due to the Student Center renovations.
This time in the year is known as “homecoming” because the St. Paul’s alumni are coming home to SPS to visit and take part in an annual gathering.

This year, four new alumni directors have been appointed to represent four separate decades. Alumnus of 1972 and Science teacher, Mark Richards is in charge of the 1970’s. Robert Simpson, Religion teacher and class of 1988, is the representative for the 1980’s classes. Alumnus of 1991 Al Nastasi is to represent the classes of the 1990’s, and Lee Pierre represents the classes of the 2000’s.
“Before and after the Homecoming game, there is an alumni gathering with food and drinks in the cafeteria,” stated Simpson, encouraging all alumni of the school to join in the festivities.
As an Alumni director, Simpson’s duties include meeting with the three other directors to coordinate events and keeping alumni informed. Simpson stated that students don’t understand the meaning of Homecoming as a time when the alumni of SPS are encouraged to come home and visit the school they attended “back in the day.”
Students are looking forward to the Homecoming dances where they will have a grand time, but are encouraged to remember why this week is called “Homecoming.”
