The Student Council’s annual Thanksgiving Food Drive for the Covington Food Bank broke the previous all-time record by over two tons.
“I can think of no better way for our school community to show concern for the poor in a very direct way,” said Assistant Principal Trevor Watkins.
Running a little more than two weeks, this year’s drive was shorter than normal. Every year, the Thanksgiving Food Drive has grown larger than the year before, but this year’s total represents a more significant increase than usual.
“I received word that this year we donated 9 tons, 249lbs. of food, breaking our all-time record by over two tons,” said Watkins.

Because of the increased amount of food, the delivery date proved to be a massive orchestration for the Student Council. Two different operations were set up around campus – one under the Wolf Dome and the other in the LaSalle Hall Courtyard. Over 300 boxes were used to pack and transport the food. Six trucks and one trailer were filled up multiple times and driven to the food bank. The whole operation lasted for three hours with over 30 volunteers helping on both ends.
“The Food Bank extends a great thank you to all of our teachers and students who collected, sorted, delivered and helped in any way with the drive. It was very sad to see the line of people needing food that extended four blocks down Columbia Street,” said Watkins.
The annual Thanksgiving Food Drive always proves to be a big help in allowing the Food Bank to provide food during the holiday season to those who do not have the means to do so.
