New Club Teaches Economics—Dead or Alive

The 2012-13 St. Paul’s school year has been a very productive year for new clubs.  Currently, eighth grade student, Christopher Woodman, is in the process of putting together an economics club, only with a very unique twist.

The name of the new club is “Zombienomics” and is a unique hybrid of learning more about economics and engaging in a post-apocalyptic, fantasy adventure.

The setting for the game is a future where a “zombie apocalypse” has occurred. All humans have been turned into zombies, and all aspects of civilization have broken down or been lost. In this world there are five different “nations”: Eurasia, Australia, Africa, North America, and South America. Woodman suggested dividing the club into five groups, each assigned to a continent and each with a specific goal. The goals of the simulation are different for each nation, making winning the game very difficult.

In order to have a successful nation, members need to efficiently manage resources in the following categories: military, technology, trade, and manufacturing in order to accumulate the raw materials (salt water, toxic sludge, cadmium rocks, and Twinkies) to produce “brains” which is the zombies’ food.

According to Woodman, the game will be challenging, yet totally worth the effort. “The simulation gives a twist to economic calculations and provides a good learning experience. And trust me it’s fun too!” said the club creator .

Rules and regulations for the game will be explained at meetings when the club gets underway.

“I already have twelve people that would be interested in joining the club. The simulation game was created for the camp I attended last summer, and all the game support materials are available online,” continued Woodman.

At this point, Woodman is still working on getting the basics for the whole thing put together, so the idea is still in the development stage. It is believed that the moderator for the club will be Andrew Morran. Students interested in joining can contact Woodman at his email, christopherwdmn@gmail.com. When the club gets running, meetings will be scheduled for Tuesdays during the second half of the student lunch period.
