Top 5 Burgers on the Northshore (Parker Layman Reviews Food)

Everyone loves a good burger.

No matter where you live, no matter what language you speak, no matter your religion…

Actually I think some religions can’t eat beef. I think they don’t eat beef in Hinduism because cows are considered sacred or something…

Point is, burgers are awesome. Unless you’re Hindu.

If you’re a connoisseur of ground rounds like I am, you know that it can be tough to find a good hamburger without going across the lake.

So here are my favorite places to indulge in meaty goodness here on the northshore:

5. Five Guys

You can’t beat the classics. What I love about Cinco Hermanos is that they keep it simple. Their patties are made from never-frozen real beef, and their vegetables are always fresh. If you’re looking for a burger as it was meant to be prepared, look no further. Plus, they serve their fries in heaping portions.

4. Frostop

You know that place next to Popeye’s on Highway-190 with the giant root beer mug? That’s this place. Not only do they have the best root beer floats around, but they also prepare a killer hamburger. This one is a lot like Five Guys’s, but with more complex flavors. The burger, like the restaurant itself, has a 1950s-diner-esque vibe. The burger tastes distinctly hand-crafted, and it reminds me of a Burger King Whopper, except more refined.  Try it for yourself!

3. New Orleans Hamburger & Seafood Co.

This is the closest thing to a “gourmet” burger on this list. New Orleans Burger & Seafood Co.’s menu has a plethora of burger selections, each providing a different complex flavor experience. My personal favorite is the Cowboy with sharp cheddar, BBQ sauce, and onion rings. What makes the NOH&SC’s food so special is that it has an indelible air of sophistication about it, but still flawlessly captures the Louisiana local flavor. Plus their fries are killer, too.

2. The Chimes

Firstly, you probably aren’t surprised that this one showed up on this list. Secondly, you are probably surprised that it isn’t number one. More on that later. The Chimes is a staple of the northshore, and anyone who is anyone will agree that they serve a quality burger. Chimes puts meticulous effort into every sandwich, providing incomparably complex flavors with each one. My personal favorite is their Jalapeno Bacon Burger, topped with pepper jack cheese and fried jalepenos. If you haven’t been to The Chimes yet, go immediately. You are missing out.

Drumroll…

1. Mugshots Grill & Bar

Mugshots’s mastery of the taste spectrum is unmatched in the northshore area. They provide unique appetizer options, such as the “Moo Cow Fried Cheese Wedges” and fried mushrooms, and also serve the finest beer-battered fries in the area. Obviously, of course, their burgers are their crown jewel. Served on a soft butter toasted sweet roll, they top their masterfully seasoned beef patties with everything from steak to peanut butter. My favorite has to be the aforementioned world famous Peanut Butter Burger, which is also a favorite of St. Paul’s sophomore Reagan Hill, and provides a unique mix of sweet, salty, and beefy (but is not near as disgusting as it sounds). If you want a unique and unmatched hamburger experience, give Mugshots a chance.
