(EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J.) — New York City has over 7 million television homes, making up six percent of the nation in that category. The city has two professional football and basketball teams. Yet none of them have proven to be worthy of the attention they get.
Both the New York Jets and New York Giants are 0-3. The Jets have lost all three of their games by double digits and are last in the NFL in total offense. Last Friday, Jets fans held a protest to fire their head coach, Adam Gase, to support a petition they made to dismiss him. Meanwhile, the Giants have a league worst total record of 12-39 since 2017. The team hired a new head coach, Joe Judge, in the offseason and have a second-year quarterback in Daniel Jones, but, once again, this season has not gotten off to a good start.
Just on Sunday, the Jets lost on the road to the Indianapolis Colts 36-7 where their quarterback, Sam Darnold, threw three interceptions, two being returned for touchdowns. This was after owner Christopher Johnson said he had “full confidence” in Gase, despite the Jets having the worst statistical offense in the league. Rumors that Gase could be fired if the Jets lose to the Denver Broncos Thursday night have been reported by ESPN analyst Chris Mortensen.
The Giants fell to the San Francisco 49ers 36-9 in MetLife Stadium last Sunday. The 49ers had their starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, tight end George Kittle, running back Raheem Mostert, cornerback Richard Sherman, defensive tackle Solomon Thomas, and defensive end Nick Bosa out for the game. With all the injuries for the defending NFC champions, the New York media has heavily criticized the Giants. Since their Super Bowl win in 2011, the Giants have made the playoffs once.
Talking NBA, the New York Knicks went 21-45 in the abbreviated season, making it the sixth consecutive year they have not won more than 32 games. The franchise has not won a championship since 1973, and their owner Jim Dolan has attempted to reel in many big name free agents that had no desire to play for the Knicks. Though they had the worst record in the NBA in the 2018-2019 season, the Knicks did not get the first pick in the draft because the New Orleans Pelicans won the lottery and were able to steal Zion Williamson.
The Brooklyn Nets have been in the same boat as the Knicks. Though they had a winning record in the 2018-2019 season, they have had their share of recent futility. The team signed Kevin Durant and Kyrie Irving in 2019, but Durant was injured all of last season.
One bright spot for New Yorkers is baseball. The historic New York Yankees have made the semi-finals two of the last three years, both times advancing in the playoffs. Despite missing the playoffs the last four seasons, the Mets made the World Series in 2015.
