(COVINGTON, La.) — Last Friday, St. Paul’s fell just short in their battle against Ponchatoula High School by a score of 35-28.

The Wolves had their work cut out for them going into the game as the Green Waves, led by quarterback Jacobi Matthews, were 5-1. Matthews is being recruited by several colleges for his athletic ability.

The Wolves struck first, taking a 3-0 lead in the first quarter. The lead held until the Green Waves scored back to back touchdowns to end the half.

Down 14-3 early in the third quarter, the Wolves were in danger of having an even bigger deficit when the Green Waves moved the ball down inside the Wolves’ ten yard line. But the Wolves’ defense held the Green Waves to a field goal attempt. The kick was blocked, sparking the Wolves to go down the field and make the score 14-10 off of a Brody Reina receiving touchdown.

The Green Waves went back up by 11 to make it 21-10, but then St. Paul’s flipped a switch. The Wolves scored 18 unanswered points from a Danny Sears rushing touchdown, a 41 yard field goal by kicker Brady Talley, and a Grant Bilson to Reina passing touchdown.

The Green Waves would not go away, however. They finally answered St. Paul’s rally with a touchdown to tie the contest at 28 with three minutes to go in the game. The Wolves had to punt on their next possession, leading to a long touchdown run by Matthews to put the Green Waves back on top 35-28.

A turnover-on-downs on the next drive would seal the Wolves’ defeat.

St. Paul’s upcoming game against Fontainbleau has been cancelled due to COVID-19.
