Riding High, the Wolves Look to Knock off Reigning District Champs Ponchatoula Green Wave

An insane, comeback overtime victory against Mandeville propels Saint Paul’s into the district championship against a dominant Ponchatoula Green Wave. The Green Wave are also undefeated in District 6-5A as they have outscored their opponents by 218 points. They have dominated every single team on their schedule, but the Wolves, on the other hand, come into Friday’s game with the chance to secure their first district championship in 5 years. The District Championship, in Ponchatoula, will be this Friday at 7:00 pm.
As made clear before, Ponchatoula is stacked with talent. According to rivals.com, their superstar, Jacoby Matthews is the second-best safety in the country, the 20th best overall player in the country, and has offers from LSU, Alabama, Georgia, Clemson, and more. Ponchatoula also has four three-star rated players, with one of those players verbally committed to Notre Dame.

The Wolves have their hands full this week, but they have seen big time recruits like Matthews before. Mandeville wide-out and Miami commit, Landon Ibieta, was contained even with Saint Paul’s Southeastern commit Justin Washington unavailable for last week’s game. The Wolves will be full strength this week as they compete for the district championship.

We asked junior Dylan Buckel how the Wolves’ preparation against Jacoby Matthews and the Green Wave has been this week, and this is what he said, “We are preparing like we do every week. We control what we can control; what’s important is how we prepare and get ready for Friday night.” We also asked what it meant to him to be playing in the district championship, and he said, “It means a lot to be able to try at something that has not been done in the program for 5 years. It feels great representing Saint Paul’s in such a big game.”
