St. Paul’s Celebrates the St. Joseph Altar

Altar1          This month, St. Paul’s hosted the annual St. Joseph Altar in the Briggs Assembly Center. The assembly center was filled with many eager SPS students awaiting delicious food and a chance to see the expansive altar prepared by a host of parents, under the direction of Dr. Ann Kay Logarbo.

At lunch time, the line was all the way down the sidewalk as everyone waited to get inside, where tables were filled with delicious, homemade meals with meatless options from fried catfish to spaghetti. Once finished with lunch, there were numerous desserts to choose from the altar.

“The food was really good; I thought they did a really good job. They always do a really good job,” said junior Matthew Spedale.

Besides dining at lunch, every religion class visited the Altar for the entire class period, where they were welcomed to help themselves to breads and cookies, which provided a more relaxing day and offered them a well-deserved break from their studies.

The preparation of the St. Joseph Altar is an old tradition that originated on the island of Sicily.

Long ago, the lands of Sicily were bone dry and in desperate need of rain. The fields were barren, and there was no rain to nourish the crops that helped the people survive. The people of Sicily prayed and pleaded to their patron, St. Joseph. Sure enough, their prayers were answered, and the rain brought life back to the island. The people rejoiced. Sometime later to show their gratitude, they arranged an assortment of foods harvested from the crops to show thanks to St. Joseph. After praising St. Joseph, the people distributed food to the less fortunate.
